At The Velvet Jungle, we believe in bringing the beauty of nature right to your doorstep. Whether you’ve just received a lush aroid or another plant variety from us, we want to make sure it thrives in its new home. Plants shipped through the mail can sometimes experience a bit of stress during their journey, but don’t worry—by following a few simple steps, your plant will soon be settling in and looking great.
Here’s a guide on how to care for your new plants when they arrive from The Velvet Jungle, specifically for those that thrive in bright, indirect light and enjoy humidity levels between 60-80%.
1. Unbox Your Plant Gently
As soon as your plant from The Velvet Jungle arrives, open the box carefully. Check for any signs of damage during shipping and remove all packing materials such as paper, bubble wrap, or foam. This helps reduce stress and ensures your plant can breathe. If you notice any broken stems or damaged leaves, don’t worry—it’s normal for plants to have minor setbacks during transit. Simply trim any damaged parts with clean, sharp scissors to encourage fresh growth.
2. Water Your Plant
After its journey, your plant may need a good drink. Check the soil by gently pressing your finger into it—if it feels dry, water your plant thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Since your new plant loves humidity between 60-80%, it’s important to ensure the soil stays moist but not soggy. Allow the excess water to drain completely to avoid root rot.
3. Check the Potting Soil
If your plant arrives in a small nursery pot, you might not need to repot it right away. We only recommend repotting if the soil is sopping wet or if the plant was shipped with moss. If your plant came in perlite, coco coir, charcoal, leca, fluval, stratum, or tree fern, it's best to let it acclimate before considering repotting. These mediums provide excellent drainage and allow your plant time to settle into its new environment. When you're ready to repot, make sure to use a well-draining potting mix suitable for your plant’s needs, but avoid disturbing the roots too much as your plant is still adjusting.
4. Provide Bright, Indirect Light
Your new plant likely prefers bright, indirect light, which will help it thrive in your home. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight immediately after unpacking, as this can shock the plant. Instead, find a spot where the light is diffused—perhaps near a window with sheer curtains or in a well-lit room. The Velvet Jungle plants are well-suited to bright, indirect light, and placing your plant in such a spot will help it adjust to its new home smoothly.
5. Maintain Ideal Humidity Levels
Plants from The Velvet Jungle thrive in humidity levels between 60-80%. If your home tends to be on the drier side, consider creating a more humid environment for your plant. You can use a humidity tray—a shallow dish filled with pebbles and water—or invest in a humidifier to maintain the ideal moisture levels. Misting your plant’s leaves can also help, but be sure to mist lightly, as excess moisture can lead to mold or mildew. If you're unsure whether you're providing the right humidity, we recommend using a digital thermometer to monitor the room or area where your plants are kept. Additionally, fans can help improve air circulation and reduce the risk of mold and mildew buildup.
6. Keep Temperatures Consistent
Most plants that thrive in high humidity also prefer stable temperatures. Keep your new plant in a warm spot with consistent temperatures (around 65-75°F or 18-24°C). Avoid placing it near heaters, air conditioners, or in drafty areas, as fluctuating temperatures can stress your plant and slow its recovery.
7. Be Patient and Observe
Your plant may take a little time to adjust to its new environment. During the first few weeks, it’s normal for plants to look a bit “sleepy” after their journey. Continue with your care routine, and give it time to acclimate. Be patient, and soon your plant will begin to thrive in its new home, showing new growth and vibrancy.
At The Velvet Jungle, we’re passionate about helping your plants flourish in their new environment. By following these simple care tips, your new plant will thrive in the bright, indirect light and humidity it loves. With a little extra care, your plant will not only survive but grow strong and healthy, adding beauty and life to your home.
